“FLIGHTS OF FANTASY”

An Art Exhibition by Lucy Buttenshaw & Martin Lane

The exhibition is on display from December 2021 - February 2022

In this exhibition we explore our own flights of fantasy in painting. A fantasy theme seems appropriate as this subject is represented in every form of art, but none more so, than in film. In the history of cinema, flights of fantasy can be traced back to the early years of film and Georges Méliès, the cinema's first great fantasist.

Playing a vital founding role, fantasy films represented hopes, desires and dreams of the imagination or alternative worlds, and through the technical developments required to portray those worlds, they contributed significantly to the development of cinema.

It is interesting to speculate that Fred Davys may have shown the early fantasy films by Méliès when they first became available. Davys had pitched his cinema/vaudaville show tent on Main Street, West Wyalong (by the present Roundabout Bakery) back in the gold rush days of 1899. In 1910 he built The Tivoli Theatre on the same site and prospered for many years due to the huge popularity of motion pictures.

As residents of West Wyalong, we would like to say thank you to all involved and acknowledge that without funding from the NSW Government in association with Bland Shire Council and Evolution Mining, the Tivoli Theatre may have remained just a flight of fantasy.

“Seeing the World”

In this flight of fantasy, a Mary Poppins figure floats above the seas to travel a world of famous buildings condensed onto one canvas. Mary holds her wonderful umbrella and magical bag and in the bottom left hand corner two feet can be seen disappearing down a chimney. Fantasy has allowed the melding of childhood cinema and the act of travelling to create a new, imaginative experience on canvas.
